Is There Fluid Leaking Under Your Car? Ways to Diagnose Where it May be Coming From

As you pull your car out of the garage, driveway or a parking spot, you may notice what appears to be a puddle underneath your car. If you see this, you may immediately wonder where the fluid has come from. Unfortunately, if you notice this, there is a good chance that the fluid is leaking from your car. In turn, this may cause you to wonder what is wrong and where it is coming from. Here is some information that will help you determine what is leaking and where the fluid may be coming from.

The Color of the Fluid

The color of the fluid will tell you a lot about what type of fluid it is. If the fluid is black, it is likely oil. If it is red or a rust color, it is likely transmission fluid. If the fluid is brown, it is likely power steering fluid. Brake fluid can range from clear to light brown. Coolant can be yellow, green or even pink. And water can be clear. As such, pay close attention to the color of the fluid leaking from your car.

The Location of the Fluid

Another way to diagnose what kind of fluid it may be is to look at the location of the fluid. If the fluid is near where your wheels are, it may be brake fluid. If it is directly in the center of the car, it may be oil. If the oil is closer to the front of the car, it may be transmission fluid. Paying attention to where the fluid is in relation to your car may help you determine where it is coming from.

Making a Determination

If you see fluid under the car, drive your car for at least a minute and then park your car over foil or newspaper and allow it to sit for an hour. Then drive your car off the foil or paper and examine the fluid. This will help you get a better idea as to the color of the fluid and the location, as fluids can spread and appear to chance color on concrete.
