What Is the Best British Car of All Time? The Answer May Surprise You

January 1, 2018 Published by

The British have a long history in the car industry and have produced many of the cars that are still household names today. But have you ever wondered what the best British car of all time is? As experts in auto restoration in Minneapolis, MN, we were certainly curious. Auto Express, a car news publication out of the U.K., set out to answer that question by bringing together a team of 10 industry experts to determine the top 50 British cars of all time. While we won’t be able to cover all 50 here, we are going to take a look at the top four.

  1. Aston Martin DB5

This car should immediately bring to mind images of James Bond. The Aston Martin DB5 starred in five of the 007 films, but it’s not just its star quality that makes it number four on the list. This car also had a 4.0-liter straight-six producing 282bhp engine that made it a leader in performance as well. Quite honestly, it’s one of the coolest cars to come out of the U.K.

  1. Land Rover Series/Defender

Defender is an appropriate name for this military-style vehicle. Rover designed the vehicle after World War II. Utilizing their skills and materials from their military contracts, the Land Rover was designed to be a dual-purpose vehicle with off-road capabilities. It quickly became the vehicle for people in rural and out-of-the-way places and a staple of the British Army. The Land Rover Series/Defender went where other vehicles couldn’t, which is what earns it a place at number three on the list.

  1. Jaguar E-Type

A staple of the 1960s, the Jaguar E-Type was a beautiful combination of muscle and good looks. With its monocoque body, all-around disc brakes, independent suspension and 265bhp 3.8-litre engine, the Jaguar E-Type was a supercar for its time. If the perfect car combination is beauty and performance, than it’s no wonder that the Jaguar E-Type is number two on the list.

  1. The Mini

Finally, we have the Mini, a little car that made a big impact. First manufactured in 1959, the Mini was designed for fuel economy and affordability, but could still carry a family of four. The Mini made car ownership a possibility for the masses and quickly became an icon of the British roadscape. More than a just a vehicle, the Mini was a way of life for the British for over 40 years. It may be small, but the Mini was groundbreaking.

This short list of British cars is evidence to the rich history of car manufacturing in the U.K. We don’t know how Auto Express’ team of experts was ever able to decide on their favorites!
